Hello Everyone,
This is Tom. I assume that like myself, those reading this blog are taking the same class on using Web 2.0 technologies. Of course the world of Web 2.0 is quite expansive, but a discussion about social media networks such as Facebook book and Twitter is a good starting ground.
With the emergence of anything new, there is always resistance. History illustrates this concept well. Great thinkers who philosophized that the earth was actually round at times underwent great persecution. And much more recently you may remember the condemnation the Harry Potter books received for containing so-called black magic or what have you. The fact is there are those in the world that spurn anything out of the norm as if creativity is a pernicious evil. That being said, I think that it is fair to say that social media is widely abused. Many let this trend take over their lives because it's hard to be productive when you have to tweet every five minutes in between stalking your BFF's ex-boyfriend constantly. Yes yes, there are those who go overboard. But seriously, is that anything new?
A social network, like anything else, is a fantastic thing when used in moderation. The connectivity we can enjoy through using them is a luxury hitherto unknown. In my own life I use Facebook to stay in contact with friends across the globe I've come in contact with during my travels. Yes there are horror stories, but if you are able to exercise even a small degree of self control then you can reap the benefits of using this amazing tool.
